Insurance Interview Questions for Underwriters, Producers, and Claims Leaders

Insurance hires carry long lead times before their full impact is visible. These interview questions are designed to surface underwriting discipline, production track record, and leadership quality before the offer goes out.

Insurance hiring mistakes compound over time. An underwriter who accepts risks outside the appetite, a producer whose book is built on rate rather than relationships, or a claims leader who settles too aggressively or too conservatively all affect the portfolio for years. The questions below are designed to surface the judgment and track record that predict long-term performance.

Questions for Underwriters

Ask candidates to walk through the most complex risk they have declined in the last two years and why they declined it when the producer was pushing for approval. Ask how they approach a risk where the data is thin and the broker is experienced and credible. Ask what their loss ratio has been across their book over the last three years and how it compares to the target. Underwriters who have genuinely managed a book will have specific, honest answers to loss ratio questions.

Questions for Producers and Account Managers

Ask candidates to describe the size and composition of their current book of business and what percentage of it is in a non-compete or subject to a garden leave. Ask how they have retained a client who was being aggressively courted by a competitor at renewal. Ask how they built their first 100 clients and what methods still work versus what has changed. Producers with portable books will be specific. Those without will be vague about what they actually own.

Questions for Claims and Operations Leaders

Ask claims managers to describe the most difficult coverage dispute they have managed and how they reached a resolution without litigation. Ask how they have built or improved a claims team's consistency and quality under time pressure. Ask what their current team's average time to first contact is and what the target is. Operations and claims leaders who own their metrics will answer with numbers.

Filling an underwriter, producer, or claims manager role?

The best insurance talent is embedded in existing books and roles. BEG reaches passive insurance professionals and fills roles in 23-35 days at roughly 50% less than contingency.

Checking Licenses and NIPR Records

Before making an insurance hire, verify all licenses through the NIPR database or your state's insurance department portal. For producers, check the National Producer Number for any disciplinary actions, license surrenders, or regulatory findings. For roles with securities components, check FINRA BrokerCheck. A licensing verification takes 20 minutes and has saved employers from hires that would have created compliance and E&O exposure.

FAQ

How do I assess a producer's book portability in an interview?

Ask directly: what percentage of your current book do you believe would follow you to a new firm, and what is the basis for that belief? Ask whether you are subject to a noncompete or non-solicitation and what its scope is. Portability is a business outcome question, not a legal one. The producer's honest assessment is more useful than their optimistic one.

What credentials should I verify for an insurance hire?

Verify all state licenses through NIPR, check for disciplinary actions or license surrenders, verify FINRA registration for broker-dealer roles, and for claims roles, check for any public records related to bad faith actions or regulatory findings.

How long should an insurance underwriter interview process take?

Two to three rounds is appropriate: a technical interview with the underwriting leader to assess risk judgment, a second round with a peer underwriter and a compliance or actuarial stakeholder, and optionally a case study where the candidate underwrites a representative submission. More than three rounds loses strong candidates to faster-moving competitors.
