What is Semi-Weekly Depositor?

By Anthony Moretti · Updated June 2026

An employer whose total Form 941 tax liability exceeded $50,000 during the lookback period. Semi-weekly depositors must deposit taxes by Wednesday for Friday-Saturday payrolls and by Friday for Sunday-Thursday payrolls.

Why Semi-Weekly Depositor matters for employers

Semi-weekly depositors face the tightest payroll tax deposit deadlines of any employer category. For wages paid on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, the deposit is due the following Wednesday. For wages paid on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday, the deposit is due the following Friday. Failing to meet these deadlines results in failure-to-deposit penalties that escalate quickly: 2% for deposits 1-5 days late, 5% for 6-15 days late, and 10% for more than 15 days late.

Electronic deposit via EFTPS is mandatory for semi-weekly depositors. First-time violations may qualify for abatement if the employer has a clean compliance history, but repeated late deposits signal systemic issues that invite IRS scrutiny beyond just penalties.
