What is Shift Differential?

By Anthony Moretti · Updated June 2026

Additional pay above base wages for working undesirable hours such as nights, weekends, or holidays. Shift differentials must be factored into the regular rate of pay when calculating overtime.

Why Shift Differential matters for employers

Shift differentials compensate employees for working hours that are less desirable, such as overnight shifts, weekend shifts, and holidays. A night shift differential of $2-$4 per hour and a weekend differential of $3-$5 per hour are common in healthcare, manufacturing, and security, though amounts vary widely by industry and location.

The FLSA requires that shift differentials be included in the regular rate of pay when calculating overtime. An employee earning $18 base plus a $2 night differential has a $20 regular rate for any week they work the night shift, making their overtime rate $30 per hour, not $27. Failing to include differentials in the regular rate understates overtime and creates FLSA back pay exposure.
